Governor Cuomo announced a series of proposals that reflect the administration’s continuing commitment to address persistent and pernicious discrimination.

Gender equality was front and center at this year’s State of the State. While many leaders in the country are talking about the #MeToo Movement and wage inequality, PowHer New York is proud that our governor has offered a multi-pronged agenda at this historic moment in the fight for women's rights.

Specifically, proposals include targeted legislation to eliminate sexual harassment in government. At a time when women's reproductive rights are under assault in Washington, Governor Cuomo stated unequivocal support for codification of Roe v. Wade in New York law and passage of the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act. Focus was also on curtailing sexual extortion, expanding and improving early childhood programs, and immigrant rights, in addition to election reform, tax relief, infrastructure development, job training, and much more. To increase the financial opportunities for women, he called for review of the sub-minimum tipped wage and the expansion of the MWBE program. As well, Governor Cuomo announced plans to ensure that the New York's pension funds invest in companies with adequate female and minority representation in their management and on their boards of directors, a new approach to increasing women’s leadership urged by PowHerNY. We anticipate support for other economic initiatives, as well. Congratulations to all PowHerNY Network partners and advocates who have worked long and hard pushing these issues. Our collaborative efforts are making a difference and our collective PowHer will be needed to move our shared agenda forward. Look for many ways to take action in the coming months!
