Recalling her experience as a first year nursing student, when she nearly lost a patient due to an unsafe abortion prior to Roe v. Wade, she called for support for human rights, reproductive choice and women’s autonomy around the world, calling on the crowd to defend hard fought victories, push progress forward and fulfill the promise of The Beijing Platform for Action.

Mary Luke recognized the new Board, and introduced Stephanie Bruder as her Co-President for 2019-2020, and continuing President into 2021. Stephanie Bruder spoke about the need to grow awareness and donations for UN Women, and the Chapter’s responsibility to stand up as New York for gender equality in places with fewer resources. She related that women in Mozambique, Zimababwe and Malawi, devastated by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, need the support of UN Women offices on the ground, and called for donations by texting “GIVE” to 917-924-8065. She warmly introduced special guest Angeline Martyn, Head of Private Sector Engagement at UN Women.

Martyn shared her own background and passion for the work of gender equality, and gave insights into how she works every day to achieve it, including details on the UnStereotype Alliance, and its growth to new global markets of cultural influencers. She engaged the crowd about meeting the timeline for 2030, and how UN Women impacts all of the the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Martyn shared details on the launch of the “Generation Equality” campaign on the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The campaign demands equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, equal participation in political life and in decision-making in all areas of life, responsive health care services and an end to sexual harassment and violence against women and girls. The audience enjoyed a Q&A session with Martyn.

Mary Luke announced the “I HEART EQUALITY” influencer campaign, in support of Generation Equality, with beautiful custom t-shirts available for sale. She thanked board member Cinzia Brandi, artist Marco Santini and 525 America for the shirt donation, and pinned them with HeForShe pins.
